La Herradura (Granada province)

  • Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs and Christians all played essential roles in the founding and establishing of this seaside community but excavations have yielded evidence of settlers as far back as the Bronze age.
  • Local trade based on fishing, farming, minerals and dried fruits still continue today, although now having been surpassed by a tourist economy and a growing resident population. This village belongs to its larger neighbor to the east, Almuñécar.
  • The beautiful bay of La Herradura was given its name by the Christian because of its distinctive shape (herradura means horseshoe in Spanish)
  • Located between La Herradura and Almuñécar is the exclusive residential area of Punta de la Mona with its villas, luxurious apartments, town-houses and breathtaking ocean views. Here too lies the Marina del Este harbor and beach, a secluded small marina that is extremely tranquil during the winter months but buzzes with activity during the summer season.
  • At the east end of La Herradura lies Punta de la Mona and its port, Marina del Este. This small, secluded area is known for its excellent diving and snorkeling and draws aficionados and students from as far as a 100 kms. away.

Almuñécar (Granada province)

  • Founded by the Phoenicians 3000 years ago and occupied by a several Mediterranean cultures, most importantly, the Romans(who named it Sexi Firman Iulium), and the Moors who made it a coastal fortress for the emirates in Granada.

  • Trading in local products – sugar cane, fish, fruit, vegetables and cereals - Almuñécar became one of the most important ports on Spain's southern coast. The fruit and vegetable businesses are still strong today while tourism and construction have been the source of new wealth.

Salobreña

  • 40 minutes from the breathtaking Alpujarra, Salobreña is a traditional Spanish white-washed town built on a giant rock and crowned by a Moorish castle, Roman ruins randomly scattered and the remains of sugar cane plantations – testament to its colorful 6000 year old past.

  • Today´s industries include, like its neighbor Almuñécar, local products of fish, fruit and vegetables as well as a growing residential community.

  • Its majestically lit Arab castle is the site of many summer evening cultural activities

Motril

  • 5 minutes east lies Motril – the largest town on the Costa Tropical and second largest city in Granada province. It too as a long history evidenced in its churches, civic buildings, Spanish and Arab architecture, and the Museum of Sugar

  • Best known today for its commercial port, it benefits from local tropical fruit and flower producers.

  • Its yachting marina, coves, beaches and golf course as well as proximity to Granada and the Alpujarra add to its touristic enticements.
